Want to know if that bicycle is stolen?

The Canadian Police Information Centre is the agency in Canada which maintains criminal and police records. It also maintains a database of stolen vehicles – including bicycles – which is searchable online. One can enter the serial number for any bicycle in the Bicycle Search section of their web page to see if they have a record of it. For Your Information.

The important thing is to know the serial number of your bike, and to have proof that it is yours (e.g. receipt and photographs). Otherwise when/if your bike is stolen and recovered, you won’t be able to get it back!

A bicycle is much less likely to be recovered than a car, in part because it costs so much less: governments don’t spend as much to keep track of bicycles, locks are not as sophisticated and owners are less likely to chase down stolen bicycles. What Charles A-M recommends is probably done by only 1% of the population.

Although finding a bike is harder than finding a stolen car I think this database is pretty cool. I never knew that both the car and bike db where searchable online.
